"Tulkus 1880 to 2018" : Exposition de Paola Pivi - Dijon

Après le Castello di Rivoli à Turin (Italie) et le centre d’art contemporain Witte de With à Rotterdam (Hollande), le FRAC Bourgogne accueille à Dijon, en partenariat avec Le Consortium et le musée Nicéphore Niépce, du 15 juin au 19 octobre 2014 aux Bains du Nord, l’exposition de Paola Pivi intitulée Tulkus 1880 to 2018, seule date française, à ce jour programmée, de ce projet international.


Ce projet est une recherche historique, religieuse et sociologique en cours, qui est aussi et surtout une œuvre d’art conçue comme une archive ouverte réunissant plus de 1100 portraits photographiques de tulkus (réincarnations de lamas tibétains officiellement reconnues).
Ces portraits photographiques datent pour les plus anciens de l’introduction de la photographie dans les régions himalayennes (la photographie la plus ancienne retrouvée date de 1873) et au travers de ces portraits photographiques réalisés de la fin du XIXe siècle jusqu’au début du XXIe siècle, c’est aussi en creux une histoire de la photographie qui est racontée et présentée. Paola Pivi arrêtera d’enrichir de photographies ce projet/cette œuvre en 2018.
La dimension anthropologique et culturelle de ce projet artistique est particulièrement prégnante, aussi le FRAC Bourgogne, Le Consortium et le musée Nicéphore Niépce ont souhaité s’associer autour de ce projet de Paola Pivi, pour rappeler que la Bourgogne est la terre natale de la photographie et de son développement avec des personnalités fondatrices comme le Châlonnais Nicéphore Niépce et le Beaunois Etienne-Jules Marey.
L’invention de la photographie s’accompagne de la notion de progrès et d’un souci d’objectivité dans le traitement de la question de la représentation de la réalité. Or ici, ces photographies renvoient à une réalité objective et dans le même temps à une dimension spirituelle immatérielle.


Tulkus 1880 to 2018 rassemble donc en un même lieu une collection de portraits photographiques de tulkus. Un tulku est une personnalité religieuse reconnue comme la réincarnation officielle d’un maître bouddhiste ou d’un lama disparu. Ce projet en perpétuelle évolution, vise à réaliser une étude complète de la plupart, sinon de la totalité, des tulkus appartenant aux différentes écoles bouddhistes et bonpo, dans toutes les régions du monde où le bouddhisme tibétain est pratiqué. Une telle étude photographique aussi complète de ce genre n'a jamais été réalisée jusqu’à présent et jamais une recension complète des tulkus dans le monde n’a été faite auparavant dans l’histoire.


Les portraits exposés sont exactement du même type que ceux que l’on trouve très fréquemment dans la culture tibétaine et qui sont visibles dans les monastères, les maisons, et les magasins à proximité de monastères : les portraits de tulkus assis sur un trône dans un cadre monastique ou des portraits de face.
Ces photographies ont une valeur spirituelle et sont sacrées pour les bouddhistes. On croit que la photographie du tulku a la même puissance que le tulku lui-même.


Les Tulkus sont collectivement vénérés pour maintenir les lignées de transmission orale de tous les enseignements du Bouddha, qui ont été transmis à travers de nombreuses générations. Le plus souvent, ils sont considérés comme des Rinpoché ou «bien précieux». Ces figures religieuses exerçaient un pouvoir politique dans le Tibet théocratique d’avant 1959, et il n’est pas rare qu’ils conservent aujourd’hui un pouvoir sur le peuple qui dépasse la seule autorité spirituelle.


Une importante équipe de chercheurs a réuni des photographies et des informations dans de nombreux pays, depuis les archives universitaires des capitales internationales jusqu’aux petits monastères des régions éloignées, et des maisons de «croyants» aux studios de célèbres photographes.
L’illustre historien Tashi Tsering, Directeur de l’Amnye Machen Institute, Tibetan Centre for Advanced Studies à Dharamshala, Inde, a supervisé l’intégralité de cette recherche.
Le projet présente des photographies de Daniel Kuma Bärlocher, Das Brothers, Sue Byrne, Alexandra David-Néel, Don Farber, Virginia Farnsworth, James Giabrone, Jesse Goode, Marion Griebenow, Thomas L. Kelly, Kinsey Bros, Vijay Kranti, Tracy Howard, Mr. M. Linden, Heather Lindquist, Marvin Moore, Melina Mulas, Tashi Nangchen, Sarah Orbanic, Tashi Paljor, Tenzing Paljor, Matthew Pistono, Claire Pullinger, Raghu Rai, Matthieu Ricard, Joseph Francis Charles Rock, Tim Roodenrys, Ritu Sarin et Tenzing Sonam, David Sassoon, Sandra Scales, Jurek Schreiner, Albert Shelton, Tseten Tashi, Michelle Thuy Do, Gursed Tserenpil, David Tucker, Neal Watkins, John Claude White, David Zimmerman et de nombreux autres.


Cette recherche étant encore en cours, elle est de fait incomplète. Cette œuvre est un projet muséographique sans caractère commercial.
Les légendes des photographies contiennent pour chaque tulku dans l'ordre suivant :
- Le nom du tulku et le numéro de sa réincarnation, son nom personnel, ses dates de naissance et le cas échéant de décès et son monastère d'appartenance ;
- L'école bouddhiste (Gelugpa, Kagyu, Bon, Sakya, Nyingma), le nom du photographe, l’origine de l'image.

Paola Pivi, qui es-tu ?

Paola Pivi est née à Milan mais elle n’y a jamais vécu. Devenue nomade, l'ancienne étudiante en école d’ingénieur et en école d’art déménage souvent.

Artiste italienne actuellement installée en Alaska, Paola Pivi s'est imposée sur la scène artistique internationale depuis plus de 10 ans avec une œuvre singulière et imprévisible dans sa forme.

Que cela soit à travers des installations, des photographies ou des performances comme retourner un avion, photographier des zèbres sur la banquise, lâcher un léopard au milieu de fausses tasses de cappuccino, Paola Pivi crée des situations insolites et ambivalentes qui troublent les repères habituels de compréhension du visible. Sa démarche artistique s’inscrit dans un renversement du réel. Elle a ainsi photographié un âne sur une barque et une autruche les pattes dans la Méditerranée. Elle a réalisé une sorte de château-mausolée avec des milliers de biscuits, des sculptures de centaines de milliers de perles, une pizza de 2,32 mètres de diamètre, couché un semi-remorque sur le bord d’une route, retourné un avion de chasse, cockpit contre terre.

Procédant par l'absurde et par contraste, elle construit un univers en forme d'énigme visuelle dans lequel souvent le monde naturel et sauvage côtoie l'artifice. De leur rencontre, surgit une forme inédite de langage, qui ouvre au spectateur un nouveau champ des possibles, un espace imaginaire et poétique.
